What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the set of techniques, technologies and procedures used to protect computer systems and communication networks from attacks, intrusion and violation of privacy. It also refers to the measures that are taken to protect the data and information that is stored and transmitted through these systems.

Cybersecurity includes a variety of areas, such as information security, network security, business continuity security, and operations security. It includes preventive, detective, and corrective measures to ensure that computer systems and networks are protected against cyberattacks.

Cybersecurity is important because computer systems and networks are essential to many aspects of modern life, such as banking, online shopping, education, healthcare, communication, and transportation. Loss of data or unauthorized access to it can have serious consequences, including financial loss, damage to reputation, and theft of personal and confidential information.

Cybercriminals often target the personally identifiable information (PII) of the attack target, such as names, addresses, national identification numbers, or credit card details, and then sell this information on underground digital markets. Compromised PII often leads to a loss of customer confidence in the target business, as well as leading to regulatory fines or even legal action.

More and more organizations have a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy, driven by best practices and automated using advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, that can deal with cyber threats more effectively and reduce the duration and the consequences of cyber attacks when they occur.
